What Music Means To Me

Updated: Oct 9, 2022

Ever since I can remember, music has been a major part of my life. My mom would frequently have music playing on our 5-CD changer in the living room that filled the entire house. As a very young child, from the ripe age of 2 years old, I loved to sing everywhere, from swinging on my swing in the backyard to riding the bus with my Grandma. I would sing the songs my mother played or I would just make up my own words to whatever tune came to mind.

When I was 3 years old, my parents registered me in violin lessons, along with piano and music theory lessons a couple years later. With much practice and dedication, I advanced steadily, and furthered my study of music by completing Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM) examinations. Participating in these examinations were challenging but rewarding, and the more I practiced, the better I became, correcting errors along the way and proceeding to the next skill levels. I was living out the old saying: "Practice makes perfect!"

In addition to piano, violin, and music theory, I also participated in many different choirs throughout my Elementary, Jr. High, High School, and University years, in which I performed across many parts of both Alberta and British Columbia. I was also a part of a fiddle band called "The Trixie Chicks" which participated in festival competitions as well as recorded a CD, and performed with the famous country singer, Brett Kissel.

While attending post-secondary education, I began teaching music for extra income as a university student in 2009 and fell in love with sharing music with others. Soon after, I switched my major from Science to Music, and continued teaching at different music schools and from my own music studio at home. In 2014, I completed my Bachelor of Music Degree with Honors and Distinction from King's University.

A few years later, I got married and had children, and now have the immense privilege of teaching my own children music while still continuing to teach some of the same students I taught since my university years, over 10 years ago. Watching my students and my children continue to grow and flourish in musical education brings me much joy and truly blesses my life with great meaning. Even still, I am continuing my own musical education by recently learning the cello, and passing on what I learn to my eldest daughter.

Needless to say, I am a musician and always have been and will continue to be. Music is a part of who I am and I thoroughly enjoy sharing such a rich and beautiful part of life with others. Music is a universal language that speaks to everyone, in all areas of life, and is the only discipline that will grow, engage, and enhance both sides of your brain all at once. It truly is a powerful tool that helps advance every other study you participate in, whether it be Math, Art, Language, Reading, Writing, Science, Social, etc.. It is further proven that musicians score an average grade of 20% higher academically than non-musicians. So why wait? Start challenging yourself or your child(ren) today, and experience the benefits and enrichment that music can offer to every aspect of your life!
